Today I thought I'd do a post that's not at all my usual "schtick." Shelia of Note Songs inspired me to share one of my favorite songs with you today.
Before American Idol, there was Star Search. How many of you remember when a little guy (with a great big voice), wearing oversized tuxedo jackets and Converse sneakers, became an international sensation winning the first Star Search competition back in 1983? More than 25 years ago? Can you believe that?
Did you know he's a vlogger now ... a video blogger? Stop by SamHarris.com to catch up with what's been going on in his life and career.
Here's one of my favorite songs, performed beautifully by Sam. It's a simple arrangement with only piano and cello accompaniment. His face and voice have matured like fine wine, and he's filmed in extreme close-up. You can see and feel the depth of his emotion ... as he pours out his heart in this moving performance. Turn down the lights, pour yourself a nice glass of wine, click on the full-screen option, turn up your speakers .... and experience this:
Here he is singing the song that made it all happen!
Here's one more: John Lennon's IMAGINE, sung by Sam Harris, with photography by Corporal Jayel Aheram, USMC. That pure, amazing voice, just a piano playing softly, and images of our soldiers. Look at those faces. So young ...
OMG!! I watched Star Search religiously and remember when Sam won!! Do you remember when he sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow? To this day that is my FAVORITE rendition ever of that song! I used to have his first "cassette" that he released after he won. I have often wondered what happened to him! You have led me to him again!
Bill, thanks so much for your sweet comment.....I guess I was just so moved for it, and moved if he really hurt as badly as it seemed, that's all. He was certainly amazing. And I'd LOVE to hear him sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow...how would I go about finding that one?????
It is always nice to hear someone singing without all the background and tweaking. Just a real voice with a little bit of piano in the back. Good that he is still singing 26 years later.
Bill--I rembember Sam and have wondered what happened to him. Lots of big talent appeared on that show..I miss Ed McMahon..And you know, Sam is singing MY song!
OH, Dear Bill, this was a wonderful post! I had forgotten about Sam and his talent! He has broken my heart with this first song ~ he's crying! I can probably say we all know how it feels to love someone but not get that someone to love us in return. It's been said, you have to experience the blues to sing them, and this poor one has! I do remember Star Search and remember him singing this song! I love it. He was so cute and still is. I am totally honored you said I inspired you! Thank you, Dear One. Be a sweetie, Shelia ;)
Thanks so much for coming by and following and I will be clicking on you too. I have looked through several of your posts. You find some amazing deals and you set a gorgeous table. I want to start collecting the old soda fountain glasses but haven't come across one yet.
I love Sam Harris! I'm still a big fan of his and subscribe to his Youtube vlog. I don't know how old you are but Star Search was my generation's "American Idol" and I watched it faithfully. I became of huge fan of Mara Getz,Catte Adams and Linda Eder from the show and still rate these vocalists as my all time favorites. It's great to know we even share the same appreciation for musical artists.
I, too, remember Sam. Loved him in the Star Search days. I bought his cassette as soon as it was released and I used to listen to it a lot. Then it seemed that he just "fell off the face of the earth" after that. I was surprised and a bit puzzled why he never become a bigger star. It's nice to know he's still around and I will be checking out his current music.
Thank you so much for introducing me to a singer heretofore unknown to me. This is a knockout male version of Bonnie's song! (although she did not write it.)
Gee, Bill, you are just such a kind guy to allow me to hear the Somewhere over the Rainbow song, too......thanks from the bottom of my heart. I so appreciate your friendship! ;)
